Your saved trips

Kept in this browser only

No saved trips yet. Build a route above, give it a name and choose “Save this trip”. It will wait here the next time you visit on this device.

How the builder plans your route

The UK is slightly smaller than Oregon, but London to Edinburgh is still about 400 miles (645 km), and a 100-mile drive on country roads can take three hours. Good trips pick one or two regions and give each base at least two nights. The builder compares ten proven routes (London with Oxford, the Cotswolds, Bath, York and Edinburgh; London and the West Country down to Cornwall; London with Cambridge, Canterbury and Brighton; London to Edinburgh and the Highlands; Manchester to Edinburgh through the Lake District, York and the North East; Edinburgh, Glasgow, Glencoe, Skye and Loch Ness; Edinburgh, Inverness and Orkney; Wales from Cardiff to the north coast; Scotland with Northern Ireland; and Belfast with the Causeway Coast), picks the one that best fits your interests and travel month, and gives each stop enough nights to be worth the move. It flags places that are much easier with a car, stops that are out of season, and festival and market weeks when hotels fill.

Day 1 is your arrival day. Most flights from the US land between about 6am and 10am, so you'll usually have the afternoon at your first stop. Your flight home comes after the last day shown. Travel times are from our getting around and driving guides and the destination pages, and assume normal traffic and no long stops. In the Highlands, add a third or more to any drive time.

    Saving and sharing

“Save this trip” keeps the plan in this browser, so it's here when you come back. “Copy share link” makes a link that opens this exact plan for anyone you send it to. “Ask us to plan it” sends the route to our planning form so we can turn it into a booked trip.

    Insider tip

If your route ends far from where it started, price an open-jaw ticket: into London and home from Edinburgh, or the reverse. On the big US airlines this often costs about the same as a round trip to one city, and it saves you a 4-hour train ride back. Rental cars are different: a one-way rental, say Edinburgh to London, carries a drop fee that can be steep, so pick up the car for the countryside stretch and return it where you got it.

    Different from home

Trains link the big cities quickly, but the Highlands, Skye, the Cotswold villages, the Lake District's quieter valleys, Cornwall's coves, Pembrokeshire, Eryri and the Causeway Coast have thin bus service. If you choose “Trains, coaches and ferries”, the builder still shows them but marks where you'll want a car or a tour. If you do rent, you'll drive on the left, and automatics cost extra.

    Watch out

Island ferries are weather-dependent, and winter storms can strand you for a day or more. Never book a ferry on the last day before your flight home. On December 25 national rail services in Great Britain, the London Underground and most buses stop running.

Next steps: price it with the budget calculator, check routes and times in getting around and driving in the UK, see when to go for the seasons on your route, and apply for your ETA before you fly. On a roots trip, read tracing your ancestry first: the records often tell you exactly which parish to visit, and some archives need booking or several days' notice.
