About these numbers
Typical costs come from 2026 hotel, restaurant and transport prices researched for our money guide and where to stay guide. They are averages: Tulum and Los Cabos at Christmas or spring break can cost far more, and Oaxaca or Mérida in the off-season far less. Hotel rates are for one room shared by two people; the calculator adds a room for every two travelers. Hotel taxes and, in beach areas, environmental fees are added on top, as they usually are on Mexican hotel bills.
Not included: travel insurance, car rental and its mandatory Mexican insurance, tips at all-inclusives, shopping, tourist taxes paid at the airport or ferry dock, and big-ticket experiences such as a private yacht or a tasting menu. See driving in Mexico for rental costs and entry rules for the tourist taxes.
Save money
The biggest savings come from timing (the shoulder months of May and November, outside holiday weeks, or the rainy season if you can live with storms and hurricane risk; see when to go), eating where Mexicans eat, using ADO buses on the Caribbean coast, paying in pesos with a no-fee card, and saying no to the dollar price at card machines and ATMs.
