Go to London between about December 1 and 18, 2026, midweek if you can. Every market, rink and light display is running, hotels and flights cost less than in the last two weeks of the year, and every sight is open. The South Bank, Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square have the best markets, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is the big fair, and the West End lights are free. Avoid building a trip around December 25 and 26 unless you want a quiet city: on Christmas Day, London has no Tube, buses or trains, and almost every sight is closed.
If New Year's Eve is the goal, the fireworks over the Thames are ticketed, and tickets are already on sale. For the rest of the season, see the UK in December and January; for markets outside London, including Edinburgh, Bath and York, see festivals.
London's Christmas markets: 2026 dates
London's markets are smaller than Germany's: rows of wooden chalets with mulled wine, food and gifts set around a landmark. Entry is free. Weekday evenings are calmest; Saturdays are crushed. Dates come from the organizers or Time Out's roundup of October 28, 2026; check the official site before you go, since hours change in Christmas week.
| Market | Where | 2026–27 dates | Hours | Nearest Tube |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Christmas in Leicester Square | Around the square's ice rink | Oct 31–Jan 3 | 10 am–10 pm | Leicester Square |
| Trafalgar Square Christmas Market | In front of the National Gallery, by the Norwegian tree | Nov 6–Jan 3 | 10 am–10 pm | Charing Cross |
| Covent Garden Christmas Market | The Piazza | Nov 12–Jan 2 | Mon–Sat 10 am–9 pm; shorter on Sundays | Covent Garden, Leicester Square |

| King's Cross Winter Market | Granary Square | Nov 26–Jan 3 | Sun–Thu 11 am–10 pm, Fri–Sat to 11 pm | King's Cross St Pancras |
| Hyde Park Winter Wonderland | Hyde Park | Nov 19–Jan 3; closed Dec 25 | Varies by day; timed entry | Hyde Park Corner, Marble Arch |
| Christmas at Borough Market | Southwark | Through December | Tue–Fri 10 am–5 pm, Sat 9 am–5 pm, Sun 10 am–4 pm; closed Mon (check Christmas-week hours) | London Bridge |
Which market to pick
- Southbank Centre Winter Market is the best all-rounder: food and drink stalls along the river with the London Eye overhead. It closes on New Year's Eve as well as Christmas Day.
- Trafalgar Square sits around the Norway spruce that Oslo gives London each year as thanks for wartime help. The tree is traditionally lit in early December; check the 2026 date on the Mayor of London's site.
- Winter Wonderland is a fairground more than a market, with rides, an ice rink, a circus and food stalls. Entry is by timed ticket. In 2026 off-peak entry costs £1 (about $1.33) Monday to Thursday in November, and entry is free if you add £25 (about $33) of rides, attractions or food to one online booking. Booking by 11:59 pm the day before saves up to 25%.
- King's Cross adds a big roller rink and suits anyone staying near the station or catching a train north.
What to eat and buy
Expect mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and mince pies (small pastries filled with spiced dried fruit) at the stalls. For British Christmas food to take home, go to Fortnum & Mason on Piccadilly for tea, biscuits and hampers, or the food halls at Harrods and Selfridges. Liberty on Regent Street runs a Christmas shop. US customs allows $800 of goods duty-free per person, and British prices already include 20% VAT, which visitors can no longer reclaim; see shopping and going home.
Watch out
Market crowds and the lights walk on Regent Street and Oxford Street are prime ground for pickpockets and phone snatchers. Keep your phone in a zipped pocket when you are not using it and your bag in front of you. See safety.
The Christmas lights
The West End lights are free and at their best from about 4:30 pm. Switch-on dates reported for 2026:
- Leicester Square: Sunday November 1, staying up until January 6.
- St Martin's Lane: Tuesday November 3. Carnaby Street: Wednesday November 4.
- Regent Street and Battersea Power Station: Thursday November 5.
- Knightsbridge: Tuesday November 10. Marylebone: Wednesday November 11.
- Covent Garden, Bond Street and the King's Road in Chelsea: Thursday November 12.
- Leadenhall Market and St Katharine Docks: Thursday November 19.
- Oxford Street: Harry Potter-themed this year; the date had not been confirmed at the end of October.
An easy evening walk: Oxford Circus, down Regent Street, through Carnaby Street and Soho to Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square, about an hour with stops.

Ice rinks, light trails and Christmas tours
Skate at Somerset House
Skating in the courtyard of an 18th-century palace on the Strand. Tickets are £13–28.50 (about $17–38) for adults and £11–15 (about $15–20) for children, plus a £1.50 (about $2) fee per ticket, with prices depending on the date and time. Evening and weekend sessions sell first. Nearest Tube: Temple.
Christmas at Kew
An after-dark light trail of about 2 miles (3 km) through the gardens. Off-peak tickets were reported from about £25–30 (about $33–40) for adults, depending on the booking fee, and £20 (about $27) for children, under-4s free, and are sold in advance for timed entry; buy only from Kew's site or its named seller. The trail is reported closed on a few nights, including November 16, 23 and 28 and December 25. It is a separate ticket from daytime entry, which costs £17 (about $23) online from November to January and £10 (about $13) for adults on Tuesdays through December 29. Take the District line or the Overground to Kew Gardens.
Buckingham Palace East Wing tours
One of the few ways inside the palace in winter: a small-group guided tour of the wing behind the famous balcony, on selected dates between November 6, 2026 and January 31, 2027. Spaces are limited; confirm the dates and price and book on the Royal Collection Trust site.
Leicester Square and Winter Wonderland also have ticketed rinks. On Fridays the National Gallery stays open until 9 pm and the British Museum until 8:30 pm. The Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace runs on set days only (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in November 2026); check the Household Division calendar for December.
Pantomime, ballet and Christmas shows
Pantomime, or "panto," is a British Christmas tradition with no real American equivalent: a fairy tale played broadly for families, with a man in drag as the "dame," slapstick, songs and the audience shouting "He's behind you" on cue. This season the London Palladium's Cinderella (December 5, 2026 to January 10, 2027) stars Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong plays Wyndham's Theatre from December 18 to January 23, and the Old Vic's A Christmas Carol has become a holiday fixture in recent years; check whether it runs this season. Suburban and fringe theatres stage their own pantos, often for less.
Christmas usually brings several Nutcracker productions too. December evenings and weekends sell first, so book family shows early. For same-day discounts, rush and lottery tickets, see London theatre.
Insider tip
Churches and cathedrals hold carol services all through December. Many are free and open to all; the most popular ones, at places such as St Paul's and Westminster Abbey, can need free tickets released in advance or a long wait in line, so check each church's website early in the month.
What's open on December 24, 25, 26, 31 and January 1
This is the part that catches Americans out: on Christmas Day the whole transit system stops. Plan your big sightseeing days around these dates.
| Date | Public transport | Sights and museums | Shops | Restaurants and pubs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thu Dec 24 | Normal by day, winding down from early evening; no night buses | British Museum, National Gallery, Natural History Museum and Churchill War Rooms closed; others close early | Open, usually closing early | Mostly open; many close early |
| Fri Dec 25 | No Tube, buses, trams, Overground or national trains; taxis run at higher fares | Almost everything closed, including Winter Wonderland and most markets | Large shops closed by law | Hotels open; booked Christmas lunches only; some pubs open briefly |
| Sat Dec 26 | Reduced Sunday-style Tube and bus service; very few national trains; Elizabeth line and most Overground not running | Most big museums still closed; Winter Wonderland and the Southbank market reopen | Boxing Day sales start | Mostly open |

The table follows Visit London's 2026–27 holiday guide and the museums' own sites; TfL publishes exact festive timetables nearer the time on its status page.
Watch out
Press reports in late October 2026 described major rail engineering works from about December 25 to January 3 at London Paddington (including the Heathrow Express), on lines out of Liverpool Street and at Euston. National Rail had not posted the details at the end of October. If you fly in or out between Christmas and New Year, plan on the Piccadilly line for Heathrow and check National Rail before you book a day trip. Flying on December 25 itself means a booked car or taxi to the airport.
Spending Christmas Day in London
It can be a lovely, quiet day if you plan for it. Book Christmas lunch months ahead (set menus, often at high prices), stay within walking distance of the river or a park, and spend the day on foot through empty Westminster, the City or Hyde Park. Many churches welcome visitors at Christmas services. Buy snacks on December 24.

New Year's Eve
The midnight fireworks over the Thames by the London Eye are ticketed. For December 31, 2026, tickets went on sale on October 23 through Ticketmaster, the only authorized seller, linked from london.gov.uk. Standard areas were £40 (about $53) for visitors from outside London and premium areas £55 (about $73). Without a ticket you cannot get near the river around Westminster and the South Bank on the night.
- No ticket? Primrose Hill and Parliament Hill give distant, crowded views of the skyline.
- Travel: there has been no free travel on New Year's Eve in recent years. The Tube usually runs late into the early hours, but TfL confirms the details only in the weeks before.
- New Year's Day: London traditionally holds a New Year's Day Parade through the West End; check the 2027 route.
For a Scottish New Year instead, Edinburgh's Hogmanay runs December 29 to January 1; see December and Edinburgh.
Hotels and prices
- December 1–17, midweek: the best value of the season. Budget chains such as Premier Inn and Travelodge often charge near their autumn rates, roughly £90–180 (about $120–240) a night for two in central London, with Friday and Saturday nights higher as office parties fill the city.
- December 18 to January 2: peak. Most UK schools are on holiday from about December 19, transatlantic fares are at their highest, and riverside hotels for New Year's Eve fill early.
- December 24–27: rooms can be good value as business travel stops, in exchange for closed sights and almost no transport.
- Where to stay: Covent Garden or the South Bank put you within walking distance of the markets, the lights and, on Christmas Day, the river. See where to stay in London.
Save money
Fly in by about December 10 and out by December 17 to miss both the holiday airfare spike and the market-weekend hotel premium. Afternoon tea is a popular Christmas treat: the Ritz's starts at £95 (about $126) for adults and books up weeks ahead in December, while hotel teas elsewhere cost less; see London food.

What to pack
- A warm waterproof coat with a hood; snow is rare, rain is not.
- Hat, scarf and gloves for evening markets and skating.
- Waterproof shoes with grip for wet sidewalks.
- One smart outfit for the theater, afternoon tea or Christmas lunch.
- A small zipped crossbody bag for crowds. See packing for the full list.
Bottom line
Christmas in London is best from December 1 to 18: everything festive is running, sights keep normal hours, and prices have not spiked. Come for Christmas week only if you want a quiet city and have booked lunch, and for New Year only with a fireworks ticket or a hill to watch from.
